How to clean an industrial keyboard

2025-07-31

Cleaning industrial keyboards requires a balance between performance and safety. Depending on the material and degree of contamination, the following professional cleaning methods are recommended:

1. Basic Cleaning Process
Power Disconnection

Before operating, disconnect the power supply to prevent liquid infiltration and short circuits.

Surface Dust Removal

Use a soft-bristled brush (not a wire brush) to clean the gaps between the keycaps in a single direction to prevent dust from reaccumulating.

Disinfection and Sterilization

Spray hypochlorous acid disinfectant with a lint-free cloth to wipe; it kills 99.999% of bacteria and is non-corrosive.

2. Deep Cleaning Methods
Detachable Keyboard
  • After taking a photo to record the key layout, remove the keycaps vertically using a key puller.
  • Soak the keycaps in warm water with a neutral detergent for 15 minutes. Scrub the inside with an old toothbrush to remove any grease.
  • Use a can of compressed air (from a distance of 10 cm) to remove dust from the circuit board. Gently wipe the switches with an alcohol pad.
Non-removable keyboards
  • Use a used toothbrush dipped in a baking soda solution (1:3 ratio) to clean the grille. Use a hair dryer on low heat to accelerate drying.
When cleaning industrial keyboards, strictly follow their IP rating (for example, IP68 keyboards are washable) to avoid damaging the seal.
